Artist's Description

One of the best-known covered bridges is the 204-foot single-span Burr arch truss known as Meem's Bottom Covered Bridge in Mount Jackson. Constructed in 1892-93 from materials cut and quarried nearby for the massive arch supports and stone abutments, which extended 10 feet below the riverbed. Deeded to the Highway Department in the 1930's in return for assuming its maintenance.

This long span over the North Fork of the river carried traffic for more than 80 years before being burned by vandals on Halloween 1976. After salvaging the original timbers, the bridge was reconstructed and eventually undergirded with steel beams and concrete piers. The bridge was reopened to traffic in 1979 and is still in operation to date.

One of the many stops along the Wilderness Trail in Shenandoah County!

About Cathy Shiflett

Cathy Shiflett

I was born in Virginia and lived all over the U.S. But just like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz "there's no place like home". I am a lover of nature and the great outdoors. Living in Virginia offers a perfect combination of scenery from the Majestic Blue Ridge Parkway and Shenandoah Valley to the Eastern Shore . There is nothing I enjoy more than a ride down a country road capturing Nature at it's finest. I am addicted to Waterfalls, Sunsets & Silhouettes. I have always had a passion for photography and have many years behind the lens. I prefer Natural Light photography.and enjoy sharing with the world all the images I have “Pictured In Time”. After spending the last 40 years in management, sales and customer service. I needed a...
